Implantation of a penile prosthesis

A distinction is made between two different types of prosthesis. Rigid and semi-rigid prostheses are firm and cause a kind of “permanent erection.” The alternative, which are prostheses that can be hydraulically filled and drained, are preferred at Goldstadt Private Clinic as they are more similar to the natural process.

Questions about the implantation of a penile prosthesis

The artificial erectile tissue is inserted through an incision made at the root of the penis. Before sexual intercourse, this can be filled with fluid pumped in from a reservoir. This reservoir is inserted into the pelvic area and connected to the prosthesis via small tubes. The pump is located in the scrotum and can be easily operated by the patient.

Admission for surgery takes place on the day of the procedure. After the operation, inpatient treatment is recommended for 5-7 days. The prosthesis is first activated, and the patient introduced to its handling after 6 weeks. Sex is possible again about 2 months after being discharged. It is recommended not to work for 1-2 weeks after being discharged and to take it easy.

In addition to the general risks of any surgical procedure, such as bleeding, inflammation, and disturbance of wound healing, there are risks specific to this type of surgery. As with any foreign body implantation, there is a risk of infection, in which case the prosthesis will need to be removed. The prosthesis may also fail after a few years. All possible risks of the surgical intervention are discussed in a detailed explanatory discussion prior to the operation.

The chances of satisfactory sexual intercourse after the procedure are good. However, sometimes the system fails after years.
